Hello, my name is William. My own struggles with substances began at age 13 and ended, contingent on another day sober, at 23. My story is not unique and is like most others struggling with addiction.
During the time that I was using, I not only lost so much but forfeited many opportunities along the way. Things culminated in my being homeless in Boston. However, I consider myself one of the lucky ones having gotten sober at a younger age and I am grateful for that.
Once sober, I had to face the facts. I was 23 and knew nothing of being an adult. I reluctantly put my faith in those who knew more than me and took suggestions and guidance from experts in addiction. It was the best decision I have ever made.
After fully immersing myself in a life of sobriety, things slowly began to change. I have learned many things along the way. One of which, is if you walk in a direction for 10 years, it will take you 10 more to get back. There are no shortcuts. Recovery truly is a one-day-at-a-time lifestyle.
With the love and support of friends and family, I have been lucky enough to become a son again, a participating member of society, and have had new experiences such as becoming a husband and a father.
My first 21 years of life were spent in and around The Whaling City, so I know the area well. I remain a passionate believer in the resurrection of a true iconic American city, and I look forward to doing my part in giving back to the city I love the most.
